Jones Mountain Cabin
Jones Mt.
This is Jones Mountain Cabin. It is maintained by the Potomac appalachian Trail Club. We rented it for the weekend of September 11-13, 1998.
Our Group
We took nine people total. Jones Mountain is the most remote of all the PATC cabins. We hiked in from the east, and which was about 3.5 miles, and about 1000 vertical feet. The cabin is also accessible from the west (from skyline drive) but the hike is about 6 miles.
Inside the cabin
Mark stands near the fireplace on the cabin's main level. There is a loft above for sleeping that covers about 3/4 of the first floor.
Getting water from the spring
On KP, Gabe and Joey get water from the artesian spring located about 25 meters from the cabin. It's just a trickle, but it's enough!
We left our church in Rockville, MD at 4:30 pm, and arrived at the trailhead at about 7pm. (with moderate traffic) We got in about an hour of hiking before it got completely dark, and covered about 1 1/2 miles. Once it got dark, we pushed on without lights for about an hour, but only covered about a half mile. (it was black as sin under the thick canopy of trees!) we eventually broke out the flashlights, and arrived at the cabin shortly after ten PM looking like a wagon train from Vegas.
View from Bear Church Rock
The view from Bear Church Rock, 3000 foot elevation. We hiked to the top on Saturday. Take lots of water! Want a closer look? Check out the interactive QVTR Video here.
